AR (Augmented Reality) and Education

Even though we don't have the augmented reality as Tony Stark has; technology is developing every day and augmented reality slowly becoming part of our lives.
If you don't know what augmented reality is, let me explain briefly 🙋 Augmented reality is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory. I think the most important fact about AR;  playing with the existing environment instead of creating artificial environment. Pokemon Go or Snapchat lenses can be example for AR.

In this post, our main topic is augmented reality in education. -If you want to see my AR example, scroll down the page- Using the latest technology in class is great. However, we need to make sure that everyone has access and know how to use it. With AR, we can create a better learning environment. It can make learning efficient, fun and memorable. According to the researchers and ''Interesting Engineering'' website,  AR has positive impact in education such as;

  • Increased content understanding
  • Learning spatial structure and function
  • Learning language associations
  • Long-term memory retention
  • Improved physical task performance
  • Improved collaboration
  • Increased student motivation

In our ''Instructional Technologies '' class, we used Arize AR app to put a video on worksheet. Firstly, we download the app (it is available on App Store and Google Play). Secondly, we copied the video link from YouTube. Then, we took photo of the worksheet (especially picture of characters). Finally, when we scan that picture, the video automatically pops out on screen.

So, with the help of AR, we can make coursebooks/ worksheets/ any kind of material more engaging for students. Also, they can create AR on their own because it is really easy!

Apart from Arize app, there are other apps that can be used such as Star Walk: Constellation FinderQuiver, AR Flashcards Space LiteChromville, etc.
